A Week as A Environmentalist
Hi All, now I'll shift a bit from the usual badminton topic to my past week activity. This week is the week for International Waste Congress organized by ISWA (International Solid Waste Management) with WMRAS (Waste Management and Recycling Association of Singapore). This event was held in Suntec City Convention Centre 3-6 Nov 2008.
Welcome reception was held @ Hortpark, Singapore's Gardening Hub. It was a great dinner under the starry sky.

On 5th and 6th, there is a parallel event held by NEA: Clean and Green Singapore, Schools' Carnival. This event basically comprises of booths showcasing the effort spent by various education institution start from primary, secondary, JC and ITE for being clean and green. It is very encouraging to see the future generation of Singapore speaking about 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycling), alternative energy sources, and other nature loving activites. Below are the snapshots of the event.

Composting
Eco Park solely powered by wind energy
Dynamo powered handphone battery charger inspired by dinamo powered light

Even Nokia will plant a tree under your name in Kalimantan if you recycle your handphone, any type, any brand.... battery also can..
Below are the showcase made 100% by recycled materials

This is my favourite
Today, I visited Pulau Semakau Landfill. I believe this is the only offshore landfill in the world made by closing the sea area between Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng. This was done by building 7km perimeter sand bunk. For a landfill, I can say that this will be the most beautiful landfill in the world. The best thing is that, its odour free. This can be done since no food or other organic waste can be thrown in this landfill. Only ashes and waste that are non-incinerable (e.g. pvc pipe) can be dumped here. Below are few of the pics:

Recycling Do's and Dont's
Following materials was adopted from NEA leaflet titled Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.
Acceptable for recycling:
1. Paper : Newspaper, computer printouts, writing paper, envelopes, brochures/pamplets, magazines, directories, books, cereal boxes, carton boxes, drink cartoons.
2. Can: Beverage cans (e.g. soft drink cans, soft drink bottles, beer cans) and steel cans (e.g. food cans)
3. Plastic: Mineral water bottles, soft drink bottles, juice bottles, detergent/milk containers
4. Glass: Glassware - jars, bottles, cups, bowls, containers
5. Clothes: All type of clothes
Not Acceptable for Recycling:
1. Paper: Paper contaminated by food waste, used tissue paper, sweet wrappers
2. Plastics: Used styrofoam and disposable plastic cups/containers
3. Glass: Light bulbs and window glass
When we don't recycle, we are wasting precious resources. But when we do, its amazing what they can be made into.
Remember: waste is not waste, waste is just misplaced resources...

A Little Step Toward Better Environment (2)
Happy New Year Guys!!!
Let us start this new year with new commitment toward better environment. This time is taken from a website about healthy lifestyle.
Lets save water and energy for the future generation by following these trip:
1. Time your shower. Keep it under 5 minutes.
2. Make it a habit not to leave the tap water running while you brush your teeth, wash your hands or even shaving.
3. Don’t run the hose while washing your car. Use a bucket of water and a quick hose rinse at the end.
4. Reduce the quantity of water flushed by your toilet.
Washing Vegetables
5. Wash vegetables and fruits in a bowl rather than under a running tap. Use the leftover water for watering house plants.
6. Always check that you have turned the faucets off tightly after each use.
7. Check for leaks and get them fixed immediately. Dripping taps can waste up to 4 litres of water a day.
8. Turn the water off while you shampoo and condition your hair.
9. When buying new appliances, look for efficient appliances that use as little water and energy as possible.
10. Sweep down the driveway to clean it instead of hosing it down.
Open Windows For Natural Light
11. During the day, make full use of natural lighting. Open curtains and shades.
12. Remember to clean or replace air filters, as clogged ones cause the units to run longer, hence using more energy.
13. When cooking, put a lid on the saucepan or pot so the contents heat quicker and you use less energy.
14. Opt for energy saving bulbs instead of ordinary ones.
15. Smaller is better. Cooking with small appliances use less energy. For example, think toaster oven over electric oven.
16. Run your washing machine on a full load. It saves more water and energy than running two half loads.
17. Switch off appliances such as TVs, stereos and computers when not in use, instead of leaving them on standby.
18. Avoid leaving the refrigerator door open. Each minute the door is open, it takes three minutes of energy to cool down again.

A Little Step toward better environment (1)
Taken from: The Green Book-The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet, One Simple Step at a Time by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen.
Dont ask for ATM receipts
if everyone in US refused their receipts, it would save a roll of paper more than two billion feet long, or enough to circle the equator fifteen times
Try to flush just one less time per day
You'll save about 4.5 gallons of water-as much water as the average person in Africa uses for a whole day of drinking, cooking, bathing, and cleaning.
Take a shorter shower
Every two minutes save on your shower can conserve more than ten gallons of water
Books
Use the library or buy secondhand books. Consider sharing the ones you have with friends or donating them rather than throwing them away. About three billion new books are sold per year, requiring four hundred thousand tress to be chopped down
